Mykonos: Power of stories

I believe in the power of stories. Stories of the past have made us who we are today, they have forged our environment and our memories. How me and my family ended up in Mykonos is one of these stories, a story of love and dreams.

So let’s go back in time; Orthodox Easter 1989. Back then our family of three (me, mom and dad) were living in an apartment at the Northern suburbs of Athens.

Acouple was living at the apartment next door, and they had a son (but this is another story lol). The woman was born in Mykonos, and they had a house in Agios Stefanos, so they invited us to join them for the holiday.

My parents said yes, and this was one of the decisions that changed our lives forever. They instantly fell in love with Mykonos; the views, the landscape, the sea, the light.
They just couldn’t resist; my mom told my dad that she wanted to stay there forever!

My dad was an engineer and true visionnaire and spotted a piece of land nearby where the locals were herding sheep, seemingly useless for development. But he had already imagined how this place could turn out, so he learnt who owned the cliff and decided to buy it.

We went back to Athens that Easter, but my dad visited Mýkonos again after a few days. He was not alone though; he took with him a big black trash bag full of money, a quite innovative way to carry cash, even for Greece in 1989!!

He found the guy who owned the land at the local tavern and introduced himself and his purpose. The guy told him that he uses the land to herd sheep, what would he do with this pile of rocks? He wouldn’t sell.

My dad didn’t give up. He asked the guy to sit and have a drink together. They drank a lot of local wine, ate louza and kopanisti and were talking and joking all night long. It was about 5 am in the morning, when the guy told my dad “I like you a lot, let’s go find the notary to sell you the land. I will herd the sheep elsewhere”.

They went knocking on the only (back then) notary’s house door until he opened; to his great surprise, two drunk men wanted his services. Contracts were prepared and signed and the trash bag found its place in Mykonos.

And this is how my dad came back to his family with a piece of heaven in his pocket!
